LABOUR FLOWS AS DETERMINANTS OF THE WAGE -PRICE SPIRAL An empirical analysis for The Netherlands
نویسنده
چکیده
. This study presents an empirical analysis of the influence of labour market flows on wage and price formation. A system of wage, price and employment equations in the vein of Nickel1 (1987) is estimated including labour flows as explanatory variables. A combination of the flow of layoffs (flow from employment to unemployment) and the flow of filled vacancies (successful matches) appears to be an adequate alternative to the unemployment rate as indicator of labour market tightness in the wage equation for The Netherlands. * The first author is research associate at the Department of Economics of the University of Groningen and the second author is professor of economics at the Free University, Amsterdam, and is member of the Scientific Council for Government Policy at The Hague. The Influence of Labour market dynamics on Wage Formation
This paper surveys empirical Phillips curve and wage curve models for The Netherlands. It provides a simple theoretical model with which an appropriate specification for Phillips curve and wage curve models can be derived, which reckons with labour market tightness and fits into a flow model of the labour market. We find that in particular the short term unemployment-vacancy ratio and flows fro...
متن کاملAN EXPLORATIVE EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE INFLUENCE OF LABOUR FLOWS ON WAGE FORMATION USING THE JOHANSEN APPROACH bY
This study presents an explorative econometric analysis of the influence of labour market flows on wage formation. It applies the vector cointegration and common trends methodology of Johansen (1995). According to this approach, a combination of the flow of layoffs (flow from employment to unemployment) and the flow. of filled vacancies (successful matches) appears to be an adequate alternative...

متن کاملThe Gravity Model and Iran's Trade Flows
This article has considered the volume and direction of Iran’s trade using the gravity model. The major issue in this analysis is to explore why Iran over or under-traded with the 76 countries relative to the predicted trade flows of the model. The study attempts to explore the reasons from the respect of both the model itself and Iran’s trade structure. This is done by analysing the performanc...
متن کاملStrikes in France and the Netherlands; a Comparison of Labour Market Institutions
Strikes as a consequence of labour conflicts occur about 28 times as much in France as in the Netherlands. This paper examines the institutional differences underlying these differences in strike activity. Our empirical analysis shows that strike activity is high in France if workers were successful in obtaining relatively high wage increases in collective labour agreements in the previous year...
